Caked Up
As usual Dhon got some ice cream cake for his birthday. It is a staple in our family. Dhon loves his sweets a bit more than most in our family though. I’ve seen him eat whole quarts of ice cream in a sitting. This birthday he was able to enjoy it with many family members. It was very special. He was also able to have some leftovers to eat throughout the week.
Dhon is getting stronger everyday and his mentality is not slowing down. He is committed to new challenges and experience and is a true motivation to me and this family. He is starting to be more purposeful in his movements that are part of his daily routine. Helping put his arms through his shirt, lifting his legs to put shoes and socks on, verbally letting us know when he needs to go to the bathroom or when he is done.
Some other fun ones are that he saw a cockroach on the floor and he pointed at it and yelled. Not out of fear but just to let us know to kill it haha. We constantly try to test his memory and it is not clear how much or how far back he remembers. To my best knowledge I think in the short term he forgets lots of things, or not necessarily forgets but just chooses to not remember. I believe his brain is in focus mode like all the time. I think he just processes if it is truly important to remember certain facts of the day. For example he remembers family members names but often forgets what he ate for lunch just a couple hours ago. He knows that he is at “home” yet he won’t remember what movie we watched the other night. He has lots of muscle memory for rehab and day to day tasks, but he forgets that he just used the bathroom 10 minutes ago.
Dhon is progressing well, and it is truly hard to measure. Weekly blogs, monthly newsletters and all the videos and pictures in the world could not do it justice. We are grateful to have Dhon, and we can only hope and imagine what healing God will bring for him.
