In the Driver Seat

With God in the driver seat of Dhon’s life, Dhon is learning how to follow His lead. Dhon continually submits his will each day to numerous people. Though most days he would want to stay up, sleep in, not do intense rehab, and in general just have more choices and say what he does in the day. There is an overwhelming sense that he trust’s God with his everyday and everyone that is part of it.

Through this trust, I feel like it has unlocked more independence for Dhon which is a little bit of a paradox. But it gives Dhon freedom to fail. He can try new ways to be independent knowing that he will be taken care of if it doesn’t work out.

For example, he is starting to vocalize words to say what he wants or needs, but most of the time it is a mumble. That doesn’t prevent him from trying because he knows the people with him are patient and will persevere to try to listen to him and get him what he needs. Another example is being able to use the bathroom with a commode chair/mobile urinal. He knows if he has an accident or makes a mess that he has caring team that will continue to encourage him through it and help him clean up without making it a big deal.

Dhon is working on driving his power wheel chair. It takes a lot of fine motor skills, but he is learning and trusting that staff will keep him safe as he makes mistakes. In the picture of the post you can see him getting in some driving practice by playing reality Mario Kart.

He’ll be racing laps soon enough!
